Google's Webmaster Tools
Webmaster Tools offers the following mechanisms for verification of a site:
- DNS TXT entry
- Meta tag
- File upload
- Using Google Analytics
Some specific solutions are described below for various tools.
Note that re-verification is done periodically to verify sustained ownership, so you need to keep any tags or markers in place.
Wordpress.com
September, 2010: Wordpress (as in wordpress.com) has support for Google's Webmaster Tools (among other things). If you have a wordpress.com account you can add a meta tag via Tools in your site administration, as described in their documentation.
Sitemap: sitemap.xml in the root, updated automatically (there may be some latency in some cases, and note that some older entries appear to be missing)
Wordpress.org
Instructions for Wordpress.com may apply, or you could try the alternative of uploading an HTML file, independent of Wordpress.
Blogspot.com / Blogger.com
This can be done automatically from the main instrument panel (bottom of the page), or you can go to Design and Edit HTML and add the appropriate meta tag.
Sitemap: if necessary, this is indicated by robots.txt and should be something like: /feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated
Wikidot.com
Options, Edit Meta on any page. Note that it may be necessary to add the meta tag to "all pages" since only the start page may be affected otherwise.
